Student Life

Support

Support: Students from Chinese language area and Japan receive special support and have a personal guide. Correspondences are in the native language and all issues – from applying for a visa, reception in Hamburg, help in acquiring living quarters and general help.

Tutor: During all studies a German Sinologist cares for Chinese speaking students. The tutor helps with the organization of the studies, with the routine reviews with the college director or department head and speaks Chinese. Together with former ICoM students the tutor also conducts vocational application training.

Tandem Partner: The Department of Sinology at the University of Hamburg holds an event every semester where Chinese students from ICoM get to know German students and choose a tandem partner.

Practice

ICoM has a limited number of practice rooms in the college building, in the student dormitories and in the ICoM operated living quarters. Practice times are regulated so all students have the opportunity to practice. However ICoM is not committed to supply practice rooms. It is also possible to rent pianos at special conditions in cooperation with our partners or to book practice rooms on a hourly basis. Our office will gladly inform you about these and more possibilities.

Performance Training

Performance: ICoM offers performance possibilities within the college and in cooperation with external partners. ICoM regularly conducts Studio Concerts, every week Thursday a concert in the neo-Gothic Church St. Johannis Harvestehude, routinly at Pianohaus Trübger, in the Laeiszhalle, in the Audimax of the University of Flensburg, and in the Rudolf Steiner School in Kiel. The ICoM final performances are in the Lichtwarksaal of the Töpfer Stiftung in the historic composer quarter.

Open lessons: With preliminary permission students are allowed to visit other instruction lessons. This encourages new ideas and broadens views.

Excursions

ExcursionsEvery year in May ICoM conducts a study/concert trip to Goslar. This medieval emperor city not only offers the opportunity to do concerts but also to study German history and the architecture of the time. Only selected students are allowed to go. The college director operates the excursion personally. The explanations of the tourist guide will be translated. At Christmas ICoM offers the attendance of the Weihnachtsoratorium or further performances of Christmas music and concerts in a church.

Citywalk: For all new students, ICoM hosts at the beginning of the semester a citywalk. The students can explore interesting things about the area where the college is located. (Hochschule for Music und Theatre Hamburg, library, music hall, music store, Alster-Sea, City hall). The director of ICoM leads the Citywalk personally. All explanations will be translated.

Student pass: With the ICoM student pass the students can buy price reduced monthly tickets for public transportation at the Hamburger Verkehrsbund (HVV). With the student pass the students qualify for reduced admission prices at most concert events, opera and museum and can participate of Hamburg’s rich cultural life.

Certificate and Performance monitoring

Performance monitoring: Each semester the college director discusses with the teachers about the progress of the individual students. The results are documented. In conclusion the student will be informed and advised about further studies. The tutor translates the director’s remarks. It is possible that students with outstanding development and through excellent conduct can be awarded with support from the Friend’s Association.

Certificate: All study programs conclude with a certificate from ICoM.
